As I enter my second year as the School Director, I have had the opportunity to evaluate our curriculum, get to know our students, their families and our strengths. This has all gone into consideration as we now change the name of our house of learning to the Am Yisrael School of Jewish Studies. This new name for the school incorporates Prayer, Torah, Israel, Hebrew, Tikkun Olam, History, Holidays, Culture, Arts and more. We will no longer be calling our school “Religious School,” “Hebrew School,” “Sunday School,” etc. It will have one name and we look forward to this change. We will now be able to say to our children, “You have Jewish Studies today!”
We encourage you to take a look at our new and improved school website, under the Education tab in the navigation menu above. The content includes some of the following: my educational philosophy, our curriculum at a glance, class home pages, an updated curriculum, new “out of the box” activities (chugim) and the learning resources, books and websites included in our curriculum, and more. Our calendar will be launched within the next week or so.
Please be sure to register your students as soon as possible, so we will know how many materials to order. You can do this by logging in to our synagogue website and clicking on the circular “Membership Renewal 5772 2011-2012” button.
If you chose to have the forms sent to you via snail mail, once you receive the forms, please complete them and return them to us. In order to meet the needs of the 21st-century learner, a huge portion of our curriculum is going to be technological, which will include art, photo and video galeries. We therefore strongly encourage you to fill out the media release forms as part of your registration. Obviously no one is obligated to have their students’ fun learning experience and projects put online, but it will enhance the learning experience for your students.
I will continue writing emails to you for the remainder of the summer, which will also be incorporated into the “Mr. Sherman’s Blog” portion of our website. Throughout the year this will be a place to read about our school-wide programming. Each teacher will be uploading updates on their class home pages as well. If you know of someone who is interested in learning more about our school, please encourage them to check out our synagogue website and to contact me. If you have any questions, please let me know. I can be contacted by email at email@example.com or by phone at 847-446-7215, extension 12.
Mr. Charlie Sherman
